RailTel Corporation of India Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Indian Railways, announced that it has received an order worth Rs 98.56 crore from Webel Technology Ltd. “This is to inform you that RailTel Corporation of India Ltd has bagged the work order from Webel Technology Limited for acting as System Integrator for Capacity Enhancement of West Bengal State Data Centre (WB-SDC), Monibhandar, Kolkata,” the company said in an exchange filing.
RailTel is a central government PSU of the Ministry of Railways that provides information and communications technology (ICT) services. It is one of the country’s largest neutral telecom infrastructure providers, with a pan-India optical fibre cable (OFC) network of 60000+ RKM (and growing) along the railway track.
The OFC network encompasses the country’s major towns and cities, as well as several rural areas. The PSU is looking for partners to set up such edge data centres in railway premises/land across 102 locations, focusing on tier 2 and tier 3 cities. Edge data centres are small data centres located near the network’s edge.
RailTel has over 9,300 points of presence and extensive optical fibre connectivity along railway tracks and across Indian Railways premises, making the basic infrastructure readily available for the establishment of such edge data centres.
